Forbidden City Visitor Guide: Tickets, Timed Entry & Skipping the Queue (2026)

The Forbidden City (officially the Palace Museum) is the world’s largest imperial palace and the one sight nearly everyone comes to Beijing for. It’s also the one most people get wrong — because you cannot just turn up and buy a ticket at the gate. Here’s how to do it right.

Book online, in advance — this is non-negotiable

Tickets are timed and sold online only, and popular dates sell out days ahead, especially in peak season and on holidays. Book as early as you can:

• Tickets are released on a rolling window before each date.
• You’ll choose a morning or afternoon entry slot — pick morning to beat both the heat and the crowds.
• Bring the passport you booked with — entry is matched to your passport, and you’ll need it to get in.

The Forbidden City is also closed on Mondays (outside of public holidays), so don’t build your itinerary around a Monday visit.

How long to allow

Give it 3–4 hours minimum. The complex is enormous — you enter from the south (Meridian Gate / Wumen) and exit at the north. There’s an English audio guide available on site that’s well worth picking up.

The smart route (and the view nobody books)

1. Enter at the Meridian Gate (south), walk the central axis through the great courtyards and throne halls.
2. Detour into the quieter side palaces and the Treasure Gallery / Clock Gallery to escape the central crush.
3. Exit at the north gate.
4. Then cross the street to Jingshan Park and climb the hill — the pavilion at the top gives the best panoramic view of the entire palace complex laid out below. It’s a separate, cheap ticket and the perfect finale.

Pair it with Tiananmen Square

The Forbidden City sits directly behind Tiananmen Square (the world’s largest public square, free to enter but passport required). Most visitors do the square first, then the palace — so factor security checks and walking time into your morning.

How to pay & get there

• Both the palace and Jingshan are budget-priced; pay tickets and extras with Alipay / WeChat Pay (set it up before you arrive).
• Take subway Line 1 to Tiananmen East/West — it drops you right at the square.
