A long layover or a single free day is enough to taste the best of central Beijing — if you’re realistic and don’t try to add the Great Wall (it eats a whole day on its own). Here’s a tight, doable one-day plan.
First: can you even leave the airport?
If you’re transiting to a third country, you may qualify for China’s visa-free transit (up to 240 hours) — plenty for a day in the city. Confirm eligibility with your airline before you fly (see our visa-free transit guide). If you’re on a tourist visa, you’re already set.
The 24-hour plan (central Beijing)
Morning
- Head straight to Tiananmen Square (the world’s largest public square — free, but bring your passport for entry).
- Walk into the Forbidden City behind it. Book your timed ticket online in advance — it sells out and it’s closed Mondays. Do the central axis; allow 2–3 hours.
- Exit north and climb Jingshan Park for the postcard view back over the palace.
Lunch
- Walk or grab a bike to the Nanluoguxiang hutong area for a relaxed local lunch — dumplings, noodles, street snacks, English menus common.
Afternoon
- Pick one of: the Lama Temple (active Tibetan Buddhist temple, incense everywhere), the Temple of Heaven park, or Beihai Park for a lakeside stroll. Don’t try to do all three.
Evening
- Finish at Qianmen Street — a restored Qing-dynasty commercial lane that’s best after dark when it’s lit up. Dinner nearby (Peking duck is the classic Beijing splurge).
Timing & getting back to the airport
- Build in a buffer to return: the Airport Express to PEK (~30 min from Dongzhimen) or the Daxing Airport Express to PKX (~20 min from Caoqiao). Add subway time to reach those hubs.
- For a layover, count backwards from your boarding time and leave the city 3+ hours early to be safe with security and check-in.
Don’t waste the day on logistics
- Subway Line 1 strings together Tiananmen, Wangfujing and the CBD — your main artery.
- Set up Alipay / WeChat Pay before you land so you can pay for everything from minute one.
- Screenshot destinations in Chinese to show drivers.
