Summer Palace vs Temple of Heaven: Which Beijing Sight to Prioritize (2026)

Both are UNESCO-level imperial sights, both are gorgeous, and both deserve a spot on a longer Beijing trip. But if you’re short on time and can only fit one, here’s how to choose.

Quick verdict

  • Choose the Summer Palace for grand, sweeping landscape — a vast lakeside imperial garden you can spend half a day in.
  • Choose the Temple of Heaven for elegant architecture, easy logistics, and a slice of real local life — and if you want a shorter, central, lower-effort visit.

Summer Palace

A vast imperial garden built around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, in the northwest (Haidian District). Emperors came here to escape the city heat, and it still feels like an escape — pavilions, the Long Corridor, the Marble Boat, and boat rides on the lake.

  • Time needed: 3–4 hours minimum — it’s big, with lots of walking.
  • Location: farther out (northwest); reachable on subway Line 4.
  • Best for: scenery lovers, photographers, anyone who enjoys walking through landscape.
  • English: good English signage.

Temple of Heaven

A stunning Ming Dynasty temple complex set in a large park (Dongcheng District, more central). The circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of Beijing’s most photographed buildings.

  • Time needed: 2–3 hours — more compact and manageable.
  • Location: central and easy to combine with other sights.
  • Best for: architecture, a peaceful park, and watching locals do tai chi, dance and fly kites in the morning — a genuine local-life moment.
  • English: good English signage.

How to decide

If you… Go to
Want epic scenery & a half-day out Summer Palace
Have only 2–3 hours / want central & easy Temple of Heaven
Love photographing iconic buildings Temple of Heaven
Want a boat ride and big landscape Summer Palace
Want to see morning local life Temple of Heaven (go early)

Got both days? Do the Temple of Heaven in the morning (catch the tai-chi crowd) and save the Summer Palace for a relaxed half-day — don’t cram both into one day, they’re across town from each other.

Practical notes

  • Both are budget-priced; pay with Alipay / WeChat Pay (set it up before you arrive).
  • Both have good English signage, so you can self-guide comfortably.
