Short answer: yes — Beijing is one of the safer big cities in the world for women traveling alone. Violent crime against tourists is very rare, the streets are busy and well-lit late into the night, and public transport is reliable and monitored. That said, “safe” doesn’t mean “no homework.” Here’s the honest local picture.
What makes Beijing feel safe
- Low violent crime. Walking alone at night in central, busy areas is normal and routine for local women.
- Heavy public presence. Cameras, security checks at every subway station, and police boxes are everywhere.
- Reliable transport. The subway and DiDi (China’s Uber) get you home without needing to flag down a stranger.
The real risks (mostly your wallet, not your safety)
The things that actually go wrong for tourists in Beijing are scams, not assault:
- The “tea house” / “art student” scam — a friendly English-speaker invites you for tea or to see an exhibition, then you’re hit with an enormous bill. Politely decline invitations from strangers who approach you near tourist sights.
- Airport touts — anyone offering you a taxi inside the arrivals hall. Only use the official taxi rank or a DiDi booked in the app.
- Overpriced pedicabs in the hutongs — agree the price in writing, in numbers, before you get in.
Practical tips for women traveling alone
- Use DiDi after dark. It logs your driver, route and trip — safer than a street-hailed taxi, and you can share your trip with someone.
- Screenshot your destination in Chinese. Saves you from getting dropped at the wrong place.
- Set up Alipay/WeChat Pay before you arrive so you’re never fumbling with cash or stuck unable to pay for a ride home.
- Keep a backup card from a different bank, and a little cash, in case one card gets blocked.
- Trust the busy route. Beijing’s main streets and the subway are well-trafficked late — stick to them rather than empty shortcuts.
Getting around late at night
The subway stops running around 22:30–23:00 on most lines. After that, DiDi is your friend — affordable, in-app, English interface, and far more reliable than hailing on the street. Make sure it’s linked to a working payment method before you need it.
