Beijing has four very distinct seasons, and the timing of your trip changes everything — the weather on the Great Wall, the crowds at the Forbidden City, even hotel prices. Here’s the honest local breakdown.
The short answer
Autumn (mid-September to late October) is the best time to visit Beijing: clear skies, crisp comfortable air, golden leaves, and the lowest chance of rain. Late spring (April–May) is the strong runner-up. Summer is hot, humid and crowded; deep winter is cold but cheap and uncrowded.
Month by month
- January–February — Cold (often below freezing) and dry. Smallest crowds, lowest prices. Avoid Chinese New Year itself (the date shifts each year): many shops close and travel within China is chaotic. Great for snow-dusted Wall photos if you bundle up.
- March — Cold easing into spring; occasional dust/wind. Shoulder season prices.
- April–May — Mild, blossoming, lovely. One of the two best windows. Avoid the May 1 Labour Day holiday — domestic crowds spike hard.
- June — Warming up, still bearable, before the worst humidity. Decent value.
- July–August — Hot, humid, and the rainy season. Also Chinese summer school holidays, so attractions are packed with domestic tour groups. The Wall in August heat is genuinely tough.
- September–October — The sweet spot. Comfortable temperatures, clear air, autumn colors. Avoid the Oct 1 National Day “Golden Week” (Oct 1–7) — it’s the single busiest travel week in China.
- November — Cooling fast, crowds thinning, prices dropping. Crisp and pleasant early in the month.
- December — Cold and dry, very few tourists, lowest prices outside of holidays.
Holidays to plan around
Three periods see domestic crowds and prices surge — sights get packed and trains/hotels sell out:
- Chinese New Year (late Jan / Feb, date varies)
- Labour Day (around May 1)
- National Day “Golden Week” (Oct 1–7)
If your dates are flexible, steer clear of these. If they’re not, book everything early.
What to pack by season
- Spring/Autumn: layers — mornings are cool, afternoons warm.
- Summer: light, breathable clothing, sun protection, a small umbrella for sudden rain.
- Winter: a serious coat, hat and gloves — the wind off the plains is biting, especially on the Wall.
