A lot of travelers don’t realize they can spend several days in Beijing without applying for a visa at all. China’s transit policy now allows eligible visitors a stay of up to 240 hours (10 days) when passing through. Here’s how it works in plain English.

The basic idea
If you’re a passport holder from one of the eligible countries and you’re transiting through China to a third destination, you can enter visa-free and stay up to 240 hours within the permitted region (which includes Beijing). It’s designed for stopovers — not for a China-only round trip.
The core conditions
- You must be from an eligible country. The list covers many European, North/South American, Asian and Oceanian nations — but not all. Check your passport against the current list.
- **You need an onward ticket to a third country/region. Your route has to be A → China → C, where C is different from A. Flying in and back out to the same country you came from generally does not** qualify.
- You must stay within the allowed area for the duration. Beijing is included; confirm the current regional scope.
- You enter at an approved port and declare your intent to use transit (often called “temporary entry permit”) at immigration.
What you can do on it
- Sightsee freely in Beijing for up to 10 days — Forbidden City, Great Wall, hutongs, the lot.
- Pair it with a stopover on a long-haul route (a perfect excuse for a Beijing layover).
What it’s not for
- It’s not a tourist visa. If China is your only destination, or you want to stay longer / leave the permitted region, you need a proper tourist (L) visa.
- Don’t overstay the hour count — it’s strict.
Prepare before you fly
- Have your onward ticket (to the third country) and accommodation details ready to show.
- Tell your airline in advance that you intend to use transit visa-free entry — they verify it at check-in.
